A New World Suite is a suite of music composed for jazz ensemble and string quartet, inspired by the silent film The Man with the Movie Camera. The suite consists of six movements played consecutively and without interruption, meant to serve as a score for 45 minutes of the film. I chose this film as inspiration due to its artistic achievement and distinctive visual and editing style. Directed by Dziga Vertov, this 1929 documentary showcases a day in the life of a filmmaker moving through urban environments in the Soviet Union during a moment of political transition. Vertov developed a modernist approach to documentary films, which he considered superior to fictional films, inspired by other Russian avant-garde artists. While achieving his goal of capturing "life caught unawares," Vertov also layered a meta-narrative into the film through montage, quick edits, and visual trickery to incorporate themes of politics, morality, technology, life and death, and the role of the filmmaker the Soviet Union. Vertov's film draws specific attention to the "apparatus of filmmaking," and a film's music should exist within this apparatus. The opening reel of the film, which shows a pit orchestra that includes strings, trombone, and bass clarinet, directly influenced the instrumentation of A New World Suite. I augmented these traditional orchestral instruments with an electronic jazz ensemble featuring alto saxophone, Prophet Rev 2 synthesizer, electric bass, and drum set, to represent the growing influence of industrialization and technology. I used these two distinctive sound worlds, one acoustic and one electronic, to create musical textures that reinforce the narrative of the film. The entirety of the suite is derived from the diminished scale, which was used extensively by composers in the early 20th century, including the Russian composers Igor Stravinsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. I used the initial melodic motif to develop melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic material used throughout the suite. I drew inspiration from jazz, modern classical, post-minimalism, punk rock, and film scores to compose something that reflects the creative achievement of Vertov's film itself. Almost 100 years later, The Man with a Movie Camera functions on both an immediate emotional level and a deeper analytical level. My goal is for A New World Suite to do the same.
