Americans are surrounded by animal products at grocery stores and gas stations but the animals that produce them are in distant places, far from the cities and metropolitan areas where their products are stored and sold. This geographic disconnect from living animals and products they make is a late 19th century phenomenon that is the result of intensive food production methods which came about as industrialism scaled up. Sites for food production in today's economy are on large scale factory-style farms or CAFOs (concentrated animal feeding operations) which are typically hidden or placed far from cities due to their size, odor, and environmental impact. "Concealment capitalism," a description of supply chain economics, explains the explicit ideologies and implicit norms that keep animal-based food systems embedded, yet out of sight. Ever-present consumer norms separate humanity from the origin of their food but also commodify daily life and dictate personal identity. This dissertation utilizes a broad genre selection of 20 and 21st American Literature including science writing, history, science fiction, economics, and biopolitical philosophy, to present the reader with key texts and a fuller sense of the contemporary state of the human-animal relationship in both urban and wilderness contexts.
