Social anxiety is the third most prominent mental health disorder in the United States (Rose & Tadi, 2022). It impacts the daily lives of many Americans and can disrupt cognitive, social, and professional functioning. Boosting self-efficacy is one way of reducing social anxiety symptoms (Kampmann et al., 2019). Increasing mastery of activities, such as engaging in music performance, can improve self-efficacy, thereby decreasing social anxiety (Loton & Waters, 2017). The present study included 197 participants between the ages of 18 and 23, who completed a 20-minute, Qualtrics-based survey on music performance experiences and mental health. Core constructs included childhood music performance experiences, three forms of self-efficacy (general self-efficacy, self-efficacy for social situations, and music performance self-efficacy), music performance anxiety, and social anxiety. Results suggest that music performance self-efficacy mediated the relationship between the amount of childhood music performance and music performance anxiety. However, the other forms of self-efficacy did not. No interaction effects were found between childhood music performance experiences and social anxiety with self-efficacy (of any form) acting as the mediator. This study indicates that music performance experiences can improve music performance self-efficacy, thereby reducing music performance anxiety. While not a novel finding, it reiterates the importance of music performance experiences in childhood for those who strive to continue performing later in life.
