This dissertation aims to provide an in-depth philosophical inquiry into the nature of ethnicity. I introduce the Haslangerian ameliorative project as a theoretical framework which I find to be the most appropriate philosophical methodology that can guide my project. To pursue the ameliorative project for the concept ethnicity is to identify what legitimate purposes might we have for categorizing ourselves into distinct ethnic groups, and to develop concepts that would help achieve those ends. What is interesting about ethnicity as a category is, I contend, that it is a concept people have found useful for the purpose of recognizing and affirming distinct and unique cultures. I shall develop my positive account of ethnicity in two steps. First, I offer a general account of what it means for a social group to have a culture. I call this view Cultural Constructionism about Social Groups. Next, I propose that ethnic groups are cultural groups in a special sense; they are groups that have what some have dubbed "all-encompassing" cultures. I call this view Cultural Constructionism about Ethnic Groups. Chapter 2 begins by surveying leading theories in the philosophy of ethnicity. Jorge J.E. Gracia's Historico-Familial Conception will be presented as a foil to my own view on ethnicity. There, I propose my view, Cultural Constructionism about Ethnicity, which states that ethnic groups are distinguished by all-encompassing cultures that shape members' lives and identities. Chapter 3 first explores the criteria of ethnic group membership through case studies and critiques of existing accounts: Gracia's Historico-Familial Conception, Velasquez's Common-Bundle View, and Corlett's Public Policy View. I then propose my Identity-Shaping View of ethnic group membership, according to which a person S belongs to an ethnic group E only if S's identity is fundamentally shaped by the all-encompassing culture of E. Finally, the concluding chapter 4 is an exploration of ethnic pride, analyzing its cultural, political, and personal aspects. Ethnic pride is linked to expressions of solidarity, cultural achievements, and group identity.
