Volumes of scholarship explore the moral depth of Jane Austen's heroines; however, her male characters have not received the same attention. Employing new historicism, this study analyzes Austen's accommodation of Aristotle's virtue ethics for male characters to mark their purpose and contribution throughout her fiction. Tracing the historical emergence and valences of an ideal English gentleman, this study scrutinizes cultural norms of male behavior. Chapter 1 introduces the historical, biographical, and philosophical contexts of Austen's novels, defines Aristotelian concepts, and explains Austen's religious point of view. Chapter 2 explores vignettes of virtue ethics in minor male characters as they grapple with issues related to wealth, power, and pleasure. Chapter 3 identifies suitors with questionable ethics whose choices demonstrate the lessons of sowing and reaping. Chapter 4 presents suitors who resist heroic stereotypes yet reach a place of contentment after confronting hard truths about themselves. Last, Chapter 5 features men whose character aligns with specific Aristotelian virtues balanced by biblical wisdom. Critical focus on Austen as a writer exclusively for women diminishes the scope of her moral vision. This study counters that Austen's novels challenge male readers to see themselves through women's eyes, to admit their misuse of privilege, to face the consequences of living without virtue, and to choose the virtuous life as an eternal legacy. Hidden behind superb wit, Austen's social commentary interrogates the patriarchy's moral complacency and urges change for the benefit of all society's members.
