There is much debate about whether trained singers in children's choirs can sing in ways other than classically trained singers sing while still maintaining optimal vocal health. This is applied particularly in children's choirs in North America and Europe, many of whom seek their inspiration and guidance for beautiful sound in what has been referred to as the bel canto technique. Venturing outside of this technique may result in sounds, or timbres, one would hear children singing around the globe: Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, Northern Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America. The author believes great beauty may be achieved in each of these places, depending on what is familiar to the listener's ear. This paper and the project accompanying it, rather than venturing into the philosophical realm of aesthetics, will seek to debunk the myth that singing with global vocal timbres is unhealthy for children.
