From the fin de siecle to the incipient Civil Rights Movement, novels, poems, and performances reflect the emergence of women in public space, where new forms of waged labor and increasing sexual freedoms came coupled with risks. The Public Interior explores how women figures across a mixed-race modernist archive negotiated forms of privacy in such situations of potential public threat. It argues that they responded to the entwined pleasures and dangers of twentieth-century urban life in portrayals that conceived the resources of the city as a kind of stage play: the cityscape emerges, time and again, as a metaphorical theater whose props and costumes could be manipulated such that one remained "private in public." By imagining the city as a stage, women are shown to turn its putatively open and collective dimensions into a private landscape, withholding certain aspects of their experiences while performatively emphasizing others. The project ultimately works to desegregate the historiography of the new modernist studies, as it occurs under the paradigm of "multiple modernisms," by revealing the usefulness of an interiorizing aesthetic for some of modernity's most contingent subjects. It seizes on a recent development in Black critical theory to do so-a turn towards individual privacy-as it occurs simultaneous to the devaluing of private experience by critics in literary studies broadly, and modernist studies specifically. As the latter field, in an effort to expand its canon, turns away from the subjectivism it once lauded in favor of philosophies of difference, my study underscores the significance of interiority for the very marginalized subjects the field aims to recenter. This tenuous but often precious zone of contemplation and imagination emerges as a key aesthetic value, whose potential for twentieth-century creators of all races remains underexamined.
