In existing research, economic and cultural discontent are viewed as leading contributors to radical right-wing populist support. However, existing research neglects country- and region-specific characteristics that may contribute to differing levels of populist support. This thesis evaluates prominent populist theories and asks whether they fully explain the regional variation in support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) Party between eastern and western German states. I analyze state-level and national party programs to evaluate the AfD's regionally nuanced approaches. I find economic and cultural theories of populist support insufficient in explaining this variation. Rather, I show that the AfD taps into an East German identity through its efforts to promote more direct democracy. In addition, feelings of underrepresentation play a major role in driving regional variation in electoral support. Researchers and politicians should determine the best way to combat feelings of underrepresentation to combat the rise of the anti-liberal democratic AfD.
