Background: Alcohol consumption, a leading risk factor towards global morbidity, has increased in the past decade despite global calls for action to reduce its significant impact on public health. In Hong Kong, the abolition of all duties on wine and beer in 2008 was accompanied by a noticeable surge in the consumption and promotion of alcohol products. Due the near universal use of social media by young people, they are increasingly exposed to alcohol social media marketing (SMM). Methods: A mixed-method content analysis of 974 SMM posts by popular alcohol brands and alcohol-serving venues on Facebook posted between 2011-2019 was first conducted to characterize the marketing strategies and messages young adults were exposed to. Subsequently, eight focus groups with youths aged 18-34 (n=53) and a population-based survey (n=675) was conducted in September to November of 2020 to develop and validate a scale of a Chinese Drinking Expectancy Questionnaire (CDEQ). Lastly, Cantonese-speaking young adults aged 18-34 (n=675) were invited between June to August 2021 to participate in a cross-sectional, random telephone survey, during which they were asked about their exposure to various type of alcohol SMM, alcohol expectancies using CDEQ, drinking behaviours, and future drinking intentions.
