This dissertation is composed of 4 articles that deal with the renewable energy dynamics and carbon emissions. The first article evaluates the impact of higher oil prices on renewable energy transition in the case of Iran, the highest CO₂ emitting oil-rich country among Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Considering the Sustainable Development Goals 7 of UNDP, the main objective of the paper is to evaluate how Iran acts toward clean energy during different phases of oil prices. In this regard, the study analyzes the influence of higher oil price, CO₂ emissions, and income on renewable energy consumption in Iran from 1980 to 2019, employing General to Specific (Gets) modeling approach. Estimation results indicated that oil price and CO₂ emissions both have statistically significant and negative impact on renewable energy consumption. The negative influence of higher oil prices on renewable energy consumption may be interpreted as sign of satisfaction coming from higher oil prices, which postpones the transition from traditional energy sources to renewable for Iran. Furthermore, we concluded that income does not have a statistically significant influence on renewable energy use. The paper discusses alternative policies to promote renewable energy consumption. As a policy recommendation, we suggest that critical evaluation of environmental damage and detailed cost-benefit analysis of channeling oil revenues toward renewable projects should be critically considered by policymakers. The second paper examines the influence of renewable energy consumption, real GDP per capita, exports and imports on consumption-based CO₂ emissions in Azerbaijan from 1993 to 2019 by employing the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares Method (DOLS). The results reveal that renewable energy consumption has a negative impact on CO₂ emissions, while real GDP per capita has a positive effect. The negative influence of renewable energy consumption, as well as the larger effect of imports, emphasize the necessity of implementing ecologically friendly measures in both energy sectors. Considering this, it was suggested that increasing the share of renewable energy in total energy use should be considered by policymakers to influence CO2 emissions, while taking into account the political and other indicators. The third study investigates the effect of government effectiveness as a proxy of institutional quality, CO₂ emissions, and economic growth on renewable energy consumption for Azerbaijan from 1996 to 2019, employing FMOLS method. Estimation results revealed that government effectiveness and CO₂ emissions both have statistically insignificant effect on renewable energy consumption. In addition, we found that economic growth has a statistically significant and positive influence on renewable energy consumption. According to empirical results, some policy recommendations for promoting renewable energy consumption are presented in this study. The fourth paper explores the impact of institutional quality, namely government effectiveness and regulatory quality on CO₂ emissions for world countries for the time period covering from 1996 to 2019 using fixed effect. Based on the outcomes of the estimations, it was found out that government effectiveness, regulatory quality and renewable energy consumption has significant decreasing influence over CO₂ emissions, while GDP has increasing impact. However, total factor productivity and natural resource rent were found to have no significant effect. Based on the estimation results, the study gives important policy recommendation in the direction of decreasing greenhouse gas emissions for world countries.
