As global energy demands continue to rise, transitioning to renewable energy has become essential for addressing climate change, reducing air pollution, and fostering a sustainable energy future. However, this transition is not without challenges, with major issues including high upfront costs, resource intermittency, and grid integration complexities. To overcome these challenges, critical focus areas include resource management, renewable energy integration, and grid storage. This dissertation addresses renewable energy challenges through four major topics: converting food waste into renewable energy, leveraging industrial processes for demand response, evaluating underground hydrogen storage for grid electricity seasonal storage, and developing a method to integrate long duration energy storage into electricity grid capacity expansion models. The methodologies employed in this study include multi-scale modeling, system design, techno-economic and environmental analysis, process simulation and control, and mathematical optimization. By tackling key issues in renewable energy systems, this dissertation advances understanding of the value of clean energy, develops economically feasible methods for its utilization, and contributes to improved cost-competitive planning for the future integration of renewable energy into the energy system. It offers practical solutions to meet the current energy and grid system needs while supporting the transition toward sustainability.
