Green building practices have become a vital component of sustainable urban development, offering environmental, economic, and health benefits. However, incorporating these practices into affordable housing remains challenging due to high upfront costs and complex regulations. This thesis explores the financial and regulatory barriers that hinder the adoption of green building standards in affordable housing developments in four global cities: Boston, New York City, Melbourne, and London. Using a multi-case analysis approach, it identifies the most pressing obstacles and evaluates innovative policy and financial strategies employed by each city. Findings highlight the importance of public-private partnerships, regulatory flexibility, and targeted financial incentives in overcoming these challenges. The study concludes with recommendations for integrated policy frameworks that align climate goals with housing equity, aiming to make sustainable housing more accessible to low-income communities worldwide.
