The prevalence of developmental disabilities (DD) among U.S. children has consistently increased over the past two decades. While the prevalence and the rate of changes may vary depending on the specific disability, in general, the number has increased over the past two decades. Subsequently, the sustained growth in the number of DD children implies an increase in the number of caregivers, who are often their parents. In response, there has been numerous studies on parents of DD children. However, less is known about the gendered racial inequalities in their health and the underlying mechanisms that contribute to these disparities.Chapter 2 reviews the existing literature on the health of the parents of DD children, focusing on three key areas: (1) the differences in health outcomes between mothers and fathers, (2) the racial disparities in parental health among this targeted group, and (3) the underlying mechanisms through which caregiving impacts the health of these parents.Chapter 3 examines gendered racial disparity on the health of the parents of DD children. The findings demonstrate that the higher the parents' early-life adversities (ELAs) also elevate the risk of having children with health issues, most dramatically for Black women. Additionally, while the results align with previous research indicating that caregiving to DD children imposes a greater toll on parents, the overall health burden is particularly heavy for Black mothers.Chapter 4 seeks to fill gaps in understanding of racial disparities in mental health outcomes for the mothers of DD children. It examines both risk factors and protective resources to assess whether these elements worsen or mitigate the disparities. The study presents that certain risk and resource factors partially explain disparities in mental health across the mothers, offering a nuanced view of how race and caregiving interact to influence mental health.Overall, this dissertation contributes to understanding gendered racial disparities in health among parents of DD children and the role of psychosocial resources. Highlighting the importance of the contextual factors in shaping health among the parents of DD children, this dissertation paves the way for more equitable policies and future research in this area.
