On August 4, 1936, General John Metaxas and King George II of Greece decreed the dissolution of parliament and established a dictatorship. The reason given was to prevent a communist revolution or save the country from communism, depending on where it was convenient to place the stress. The "August 4th Regime" became the official title of the regime. More often it is simply referred to as the Metaxas regime. It lasted five years, until 1941. This thesis is an attempt to explain the origins and the nature of the Metaxas regime. At the same time, it is an attempt to explain the international political setting which, in part, made the regime possible and which explicitly caused its destruction. This aspect of the thesis touches on the background to World War II and the first phase known as the "phony war." One justification for this dissertation is that there is no systematic account of this period which at- tempts to analyze the regime within this three-point frame- work - its origins, nature and international setting.
