This dissertation provides a description of not only the levels of reported infant mortality in China (1950-88), but also of the main socioeconomic determinants, and of gender differentials therein--all of this using survival models and considering the potential effects of inter-familial heterogeneity. The data are those of the 1988 National Survey of Fertility and Contraception conducted by the State Family Planning Board of China. The data are divided into births in two periods, 1950-79 and 1980-88. This allows for maximum clarity in discerning effects due the One-child policy, instituted in the latter half of 1979, on infant mortality. I include child-level (birth year, sex, maternal age, parity and birth spacing, and sibset composition), family-level (maternal education and paternal occupation), and county-level covariates (position in administrative and economic hierarchies). I also account for unmeasured differences among families to determine whether these unobservables affect infant mortality. I am examining whether ignoring these unmeasured family characteristics may lead to estimates that differ in size and precision from what one would obtain when unobserved heterogeneity is included in the model. I model both individual-level survival models, and hierarchical logistic regression models. I find that, with a few exceptions, the following results hold across provinces: (1) Infant mortality decreases with birth year. (2) The Great Leap Forward had a deleterious effect on mortality. (3) There is a U-shaped relationship between maternal age and infant mortality. (4) Maternal education has a negative effect on infant mortality. (5) Male births have higher mortality risks in most provinces. (6) Birth intervals less than 24 months are associated with increased infant mortality risks. Mortality risks to multiple births are extremely high. (7) Unobserved family-level heterogeneity does not change the interpretation of covariate parameter estimates or standard errors. The choice of the assumed distribution of the unobserved heterogeneity component does not affect the results. (8) Infants with same-sex siblings are at greater risk of dying, particularly in the 1980s. (9) Infant mortality is highest in counties which are lowest in administrative hierarchy and economically most peripheral.
