Social intelligence has been recognized as a social product which is based, to a large extent, on the individual's social experiences. The current research examined the relationship between Chinese children's social intelligence and various aspects of their social experiences. Subjects are 199 third to sixth-graders from a semi-rural town in southern China. Fifty-three percent of the children in the sample are boys and 47% are girls. Their ages range from nine to 13 years. About 42% of the children in the sample are from "one-child" families. About 70% of the parents are either workers or peasants, and about 68% of the fathers and 81% of the mothers have had no more than junior high school education. Children's social intelligence was assessed by their understanding of the social situations depicted in two vignettes. The information on children's social experiences was obtained from parental report on the various aspects of their children's socialization and ecological experiences. The results show that there are some significant relationships between children's social intelligence and certain aspects of their social experiences. Specifically, a warm and close parent-child relationship which promotes two-way communication is conducive to the development of children's social intelligence; A lively and dynamic neighborhood/community where children interact a great deal with other residents is also beneficial to children's social intelligence; However, a strict or controlling parental childrearing perspective which endorses criticizing rather than praising children and discourages dissent from children is not conducive to the development of children's social intelligence. The results are discussed in the context of Chinese society as well as in reference to children's social development in general.
