The present study examines the occupational lives of Chinese social scientists from 1980 to the present day. The study addresses the following questions: (1) What organizational features impede or foster academic productivity as indicated by the Chinese case? (2) What structural conditions have changed as a result of the economic and social transformations in the 1980s and 1990s? (3) What opportunities were presented by these changes and how did Chinese social science academicians respond to these opportunities? (4) As a distinguishable social-political establishment, what and why were some paths and directions taken by this group of people to advance themselves socially and economically, and what might be their socio-economic vertical movement in relation to other segments of society in the near future. Discussions and conclusions of the study pertaining to the above questions have contributed to two areas of social science literature. One concerns how organizational and structural conditions affect the quality and quantity of academic output. The other concerns the relationship between "state and society" in communist societies. Specifically, the study explores the nature and extent that political structures and relationship within Chinese academic institutions have changed as a result of the introduction of market economy and the rebirth of voluntary society during the reform period. The study is mainly based on interviews of Chinese social science academicians in the Fall of 1992 and Spring of 1993, and documentary research. Main findings of the study are the following: (1) Under the conditions of strong state patronage and hegemony of ideology, certain organizational features (e.g., a high degree of centralization and a low level of mobility) are particularly detrimental to intellectual competition and the formation of academic collegiality. Moreover, these organizational features also create professional behavior and attributes that are characterized by localism, mediocrity, external reward seeking, and incompetence. (2) The 1980s reform had led to changes in political relationships between administrators of academic institutions and faculty-academicians. This change in turn had created discrepancies between state and organizational politics. (3) The furtherance of the social science intellectual-academician's political efficacy depends on the extent they can sustain and promote their self-directed institutions of sociability and the development of public sphere.
