This dissertation is an exploration of the processes of doing ethnographic research on television and family life in the People's Republic of China. Originally conceived as an in-depth observational study of how Chinese families live with television, my research plans came to an abrupt end during the 1989 student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square. Immediately following the political crisis and its tragic conclusion, which I had watched on television from the campus of Zhongshan University in the southern city of Guangzhou (Canton), I left China without any of the "data" that I had hoped to collect. Instead, I searched for and reconstructed a narrative from my notebook, letters, and photographs taken from the isolated perspective of a "foreign expert" living and working as a teacher of English. These disorganized thoughts and observations were intended to tell a different, more personal story to another audience. What I had initially perceived to be mundane concerns, however, also had relevance to the study of television. Understanding the broader social and cultural context in which viewing takes place, and an appreciation of how teaching and learning goes forward in classrooms and within the Chinese family, was essential for discovering how learning from television takes place. In audiotaped interviews which I conducted in New York City after my return, some of my former students attempted to make sense of the events in Tiananmen Square. Selectively reading between the lines of China's official media, they revealed a sophisticated ability to interpret, counteract, and expand on the content of the state-controlled television news, drawing on previous experiences, a tightly-knit network of friends, and a wide range of alternative sources. Two years later, I returned to Guangzhou to videotape families in their homes while the television set was turned on. What I have recorded and documented reveals the variety of ways that families live with, accommodate, and mediate television. However, this kaleidoscopic collection of facts and opinions from a small sample of the population about their experience with television remains as elusive, contradictory, and incomplete as my own understanding of how life is lived in another cultural setting.
