The main purpose of this dissertation is to study the contribution of small family-type businesses to Taiwanese capital accumulation by network approach. I first argue that the solidarity provided by "family" networks and capital supplied by personal relationships are a necessary part of small individual investment in Taiwan. Second, I demonstrate that booming small individual's investment influences Taiwanese individual savings propensity--thereby creating voluntary savings which are the pivot of capital accumulation. My main argument is: (UNFORMATTED TABLE OR EQUATION FOLLOWS)$$\\vbox{\\halign{#\\hfil&&\\qquad#\\hfil\\cr&{\\bf Relationship Network}&&\\cr&(Network Solidarity&{\\bf Individual}&{\\bf Voluntary}\\cr&\\& Network Financing)&{\\bf Investment}&{\\bf Savings}\\cr\\cr&{\\bf Entrepreneurship}&&\\cr}}$$(TABLE/EQUATION ENDS) The first part of the logic sequence is a qualitative study in which I apply a general theory--Mark Granovetter's network theory about entrepreneurship--in a particular case, Taiwan. The support to individual investment comes from two sources--one is "family" solidarity for forming business organizations and the other is network financing for financing small investments. I employed an analysis of Taiwanese business organization to show the importance of "family" solidarity for new enterprises. I also give a clear account of the Taiwanese financial industry to show why network financing is necessary for small business. This analysis of the Taiwanese case confirms the general theory. The second part of my argument is a general theory. Most consumption functions took consumption as a function of income, and savings is only the residual of consumption. These savings models assume a social institution in which capitalists' decisions to invest are separated from households' decisions to consume. In Taiwan, small investors take investment plans into their consumption accounts. I therefore build a savings-rate model with investment effect, and test the model quantitatively by the data "Survey of Household Income and Expenditure in Taiwan Area". The testing results show that the investment effect of savings exists in Taiwan. In the old paradigm of development theories, traditional institutions are often viewed as the blockage of modernization. This dissertation shows that Chinese traditional "family" solidarity and rotating credit associations provide fertile land for the growth of small individual investments which in return help creating voluntary savings, and national capital accumulation therefore grows faster. Tradition is the soil on which modernity grows.
