With the rapid economic and sociocultural change in Taiwan, more and more students wish to pursue their advanced studies in the United States where the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a crucial factor in university admissions. Since a preparation course for the TOEFL is not available in the public school system, students are forced to attend a coaching school. Because the TOEFL is a major determinant of foreign students' academic futures, it is important to see how such a school prepares them for the test. In this study I describe how Merica, the oldest and the most prosperous TOEFL coaching school in Taiwan, is organized and prepares students to achieve better scores on the TOEFL. With respect to its organization, preparing students for the TOEFL is only one of many services that Merica offers. Merica has five affiliated offices: an English institute (where TOEFL instruction is offered), an application consultation office, a computer school, a publishing house, and a travel agency. In addition to the Taipei parent school, it operates subsidiary schools in six other cities. It also publishes a monthly newsletter and sponsors a TV program. With respect to its TOEFL instruction, this study describes the teaching methods used and general test-taking techniques taught, with particular attention to the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension sections. Merica curricula are frequently adjusted so that they are appropriate for what the TOEFL calls for. Although coaching schools are frequently criticized for slighting actual English instruction, at Merica, fundamentals of English are stressed in addition to test-taking techniques. The actual English instruction is skill-based; for example, in responding to comprehension tasks students are encouraged to make strategic use of schema to predict meaning. Even the test-taking techniques develop skills that are not necessarily limited to a testing situation: for example, anticipating the precise nature of tasks and using time strategically during the performance of tasks. This study concludes with recommendations not only for coaching schools but for those who construct the TOEFL as well as admissions officers in American colleges and universities.
