Faculty vitality and quality have long been concerns of higher education institutions in the United States. They are also a source of concern for higher education in Taiwan. The concept of faculty development and the rationale of using an approach of caring for personal development is fairly new to administrators as well as faculty members in Taiwan. Yet, the necessity for its implementation is just as urgent there as it is in the United States. Professors bear accountability to society due to the roles they play and the duties they carry. It is necessary to know where the faculty stand on the issue of faculty personal development in order to develop a methodology for its implementation. Concerns regarding how individual faculty members can be further nurtured as potential human resources in the existing system of higher education, and how faculty members are to connect their personal adult development and the impact that it has on improving their teaching, research and service are explored with the study. The methodology for the study is a descriptive and qualitative orientation. A generic profile of the full-time faculty members, and an analysis of the data is provided for understanding the target group for the study, and a qualitative interviewing with a small sample population was conducted for the discussion of the related questions of higher education in Taiwan. The findings of this study on adult development and its implications in higher education for strengthening faculty morale and competency support the rationale for implementing faculty personal development. In accordance with the findings of the study, some recommendations have been made, including suggestions for a fellowship model for implementing faculty personal development, for future work on faculty development, and for building up systematic support within the specific context.
