The Chinese who came to seek their fortunes in America in the middle of the 19th century were mainly from the southeastern Chinese province of Guangdong, with the great majority of them from the Pearl River delta region. This dissertation discusses the compelling economic, social, and psychological reasons disposing them to travel to America, as well as the mechanism of that emigration. On their arrival in California and the American West, these immigrants coped with their new life by retaining many of the social institutions and customs from their native Chinese culture. They also adapted to the American environment in ways that reflected their Chinese culture and life. Their work habits and attitudes also reflected their lives in Guangdong, and they engaged in a variety of occupations in the rural areas of the West, including work in the mines, on the railroads, on farms, and in the fishing industry. In the cities they were actively employed in the manufacturing and service industries. In both these areas they usually performed the lower-paid jobs that had shortages of willing white workers. In the 1870's, increasing joblessness among white workers from foreign countries led to increasing resentment and hostility toward the Chinese, and to an anti-Chinese movement that brought about restrictive legislation on the municipal, state, and national levels. The Chinese attempted to respond to them, based on their cultural perceptions and background, but ultimately failed.
