The association between the concept of individualism-collectivism (Wheeler, Reis, & Bond, 1989; Hui & Triandis, 1986) and Hsu's (1981) concept of situation-centeredness is discussed. While both concepts are theoretical tools for interpreting differences between Chinese and American ways of life, statements of similarity between the two ideas are based partly on incomplete analyses of Hsu's work, and partly on an overestimation of the differences between individualism and collectivism. Components of individualism (Lukes, 1973) are discussed and it is suggested that collectivism and individualism differ according to levels and objects of concern, while individualism and situation-centeredness differ according to qualitatively distinct conceptions of the nature of personhood, the status of the individual in the social environment, and the nature of social interaction. Measures of both situation-centeredness and individualism-collectivism (Hui, 1988) are compared as indices of Chinese-American differences. Additional measures emphasizing internal orientations to personhood (Cartwright & Mori, 1988; Jones & Crandall, 1986) are also investigated, in addition to measures of social desirability (Crowne & Marlowe, 1960) and self-monitoring (Snyder, 1974). Associations among variables are assessed at three levels of analysis: across culture, within American culture, and within Chinese culture. Results support the main hypotheses, that individualism-collectivism and situation-centeredness are distinct and separate variables. In addition, there is no support for a priori characterizations of Chinese as collectivistic. Results with exploratory measures support Hsu's ideas associating Americans' ambivalence about role and affect with individual-centeredness and psychosocial homeostasis, and challenge the present author's characterization of collectivism as simply a self-centered outlook in a wider context.
