The reproducibility and validity of a food frequency questionnaire, modified to reflect Taiwanese dietary habits, were evaluated among 76 literate Chinese women age 30-60 living in Taipei in 1990. Major sources of energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C were included in the 102-item food list. Food models and photographs were used to help subjects quantify intakes. Data from two 3- or 4-day food records kept in winter and in summer were set as the standard by which to access the validity of the questionnaire. Body weight, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity were also used to examine the energy intakes estimated by the food records and the questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered one month after summer food records were kept and readministered one month later. There were no significant differences in energy and nutrient intakes between weekdays and Sunday and, except for vitamin A and vitamin C, no seasonal nutrient intake differences. Except for carbohydrates, intakes assessed by the questionnaire were greater than those from the food records. Analyses used nutrient values specific to foods in Taiwan. Consistency was measured by Pearson correlation coefficients (r). Agreement was measured by the percent of agreement and weighted kappa (K$\\sb{\\rm w}$). For the reproducibility of the questionnaire, the r's ranged from 0.61 (vitamin C) to 0.88 (protein). The K$\\sb{\\rm w}$ ranged from 0.50 (percent of energy from protein) to 0.70 (total fat). The percent of agreement between the two administrations ranged from 65 to 76 percent. For the validity of the questionnaire, the r's ranged from 0.28 (percent of energy from protein) to 0.73 (energy). The K$\\sb{\\rm w}$ ranged from 0.26 (protein) to 0.56 (energy). The percent of agreement between the food records and the questionnaire ranged from 37 to 67 percent. The correlation and agreement between energy intake and body weight, BMI, and physical activity were poor. The reproducibility of the food frequency questionnaire was good and validity was fair.
