This thesis studies proximate determinants of fertility in Shaanxi Province, China, with data from China's In-depth Fertility Survey of 1985. Proximate determinants of fertility are intervening variables through which soci-economic and environmental factors affect fertility. A unique feature of this analysis is to use not only the familiar method of Bongaarts for studying proximate determinants but also an accompanying method of fertility exposure analysis designed by Hobcraft and Little. This study finds that of the four main proximate determinants (contraception, abortion, breastfeeding, and marriage) the impact of contraception had the most dramatic change in Shaanxi between 1975 and 1985. A large proportion of this change happened among women above age 35. During the same time, the influences of abortion and breastfeeding became smaller, especially for women above age 30. Though the relaxation of marriage legislation on the age at first marriage occurred in this period, the effect of marriage on fertility had the least and almost negligible change. This study shows that the usual way to calculate Bongaart's index of fertility reduction due to contraception produces a rural-urban paradox: rural women appear to have higher contraceptive prevalence than urban women. This paradox is found to be a result of the lack of control of the confounding factor, parity. This study proceeds to the possible interactions among the four proximate determinants, and considers the sub-populations classified by rural-urban residence, education, and household structure. Particularly, because the application of existing fertility models encounters certain difficulties, some efforts of theoretical improvement and refinement have been made. Improving on Bongaarts' estimation, the thesis proposes a new contraception index, which is designed to be applied to low fertility countries in the future. Due to heterogeneity caused by the variation in the length of breastfeeding, Bongaarts' breastfeeding index is biased downwards. The study offers a modified breastfeeding index and recommends that future studies on breastfeeding consider this heterogeneity. The research is so far the only known exploration of fertility exposure analysis after Hobcraft and Little's original work. The thesis improves the estimation of the potential fertility by introducing adjustments for the secondary sterility and fecundability. The importance of measure of "time" in this model is ascertained. The usefulness of fertility exposure analysis is confirmed by applications of statistical methods.
