Since the Central Government of the Republic of China moved to Taiwan in 1949, some dance programs have been established from high school to college levels. Although, recently, Dancing Talented Classes have been set-up from the third grade through high school, auditions for acceptance into these classes are biased against those youngsters who never had prior exposure to dance experiences. While it is important to identify young people with dance talents, and to stimulate their total development through various areas of learning, all children should be offered equal opportunity to have dancing experiences. The review of current dance curriculum, informal interviews and personal observations have demonstrated that dance education has not received regard in the schools and society of Taiwan. In order to improve dance education in the school setting, it is important to develop a curriculum that brings dance into the schools for all children to experience and explore. Based upon the literature that advocates creative dance as a valid form of modern educational dance to stimulate and help children's holistic development, this study develops a creative dance curriculum model for elementary children in Taiwan. Rudolf Laban's movement analysis involving the exploration of elements in Body, Time, Space, Effort and Relationship is the movement framework for this curriculum. The application of different stimuli based on Chinese cultural resources and the integration with other subjects taught in Taiwan's elementary schools provide enrichment of teaching content. During the process of exploration in the different class activities, the processes of doing, thinking, feeling and communicating are experienced. To implement this curriculum, however, training programs for teachers must be enhanced to incorporate creative dance. These are discussed in this study. Although this study is limited to the Republic of China, through modification, it has implications for other countries desiring to develop dance opportunities and benefits.
