Using questionnaire data from a sample survey of 5,343 secondary school students in grades 7-12 in Sichuan Province, the People's Republic of China, this study attempted to identify factors related to adolescent family formation knowledge and attitudes including ideal age at marriage, desired family size, attitudes toward population growth and demographic and contraceptive knowledge. A model of family formation knowledge and attitudes was developed and evaluated. The one child family is desired by nearly 80 percent of the Chinese adolescents in this survey. The ideal age at marriage is higher than the minimum ages stipulated in the 1980 Marriage Law and is similar to the age currently promoted by the government. Attitudes toward population control are positive and knowledge about population dynamics is relatively high. Formal schooling and psychological modernity are the most important factors affecting knowledge and attitudes toward family formation. Substantial differences in ideal age at marriage, desired family size, attitudes toward population growth and population and contraceptive knowledge were accounted for by these variables. The influences of these factors persist even after family socioeconomic status and other characteristics are taken into account. The findings are consistent across different subgroups. Population and sex education have a significant impact on knowledge about population and contraception, as well as on attitudes favorable to small family size and population control. However, no other family formation attitude was significantly affected by exposure to either population or sex education. Both population and sex education are important in determining female knowledge levels, whereas male knowledge is affected by sex education only. Population education exposure has an significant impact on demographic and contraceptive knowledge among students from the less developed regions of the province. Schools should include an emphasis on attitudes and values in population and sex education more effectively to induce later marriage ideals, smaller family desires, and related attitudes. Schools in the less developed regions where mass media activities are less actively taking place should be encouraged to install population education programs to increase the students' knowledge about population and contraception.
