The reasons for the renunciation of radicalism by the Soviet and Chinese regimes remains a relatively unstudied aspect of change in Communist systems, despite the paramount political importance of this phenomenon. Several theories have been advanced over the past fifty years by scholars and political actors, but all provide only partial explanations often based on remote and speculative causal hypotheses. An alternate hypothesis is proposed that centers on the rise of antiradical policy currents in response to the recurrent and often simultaneous regime-threatening crises of the economy and foreign policy during the Stalin and Mao eras. A number of correlative factors that contributed to the repeated recrudescence and eventual triumph of antiradicalism over the radical associates of Stalin and Mao are examined, including the reactions of the paramount leaders and other radicals to retreats from radicalism, the privileging of elites, failures of mobilizatory policy, theoretical underdevelopment, and contradictions between the requisites of rapid industrialization and the strategy of Communist transformationism. Some consequences of deradicalization for the future of the revolutionary experience are adduced.
