Pilgrimage: An American Journey is the title of curriculum designed for an orientation program for three theological students from the China Christian Council, People's Republic of China. The students were the first to be sent from the churches in China to study in seminaries in the United States since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The purpose of the year long program in New York City was to introduce the students to American culture and prepare them for graduate studies in the United States. Because American society is not monolithic, but made up of many diverse communities, the curriculum was designed to not only introduce students to the academic communities at Teachers College, Columbia University, and Union Theological Seminary, but to different American voices and perspectives from Harlem, Chinatown, the New Jersey suburbs and many other communities. Linguistically, the students needed "survival English" and communication strategies to maximize their exposure to American society and broaden their range of experiences in the United States. They also needed instruction in English for academic purposes: to understand lectures, learn word processing, participate in seminars, and write research papers. Finally, they needed to "do theology" in English--to talk and write about the church and Christians in China. The method of both teaching and research reflected a dialogical, open-ended process of inquiry, reflection, writing and discussion on the part of both the students and myself as teacher. Part of the dialogic journey for me as the teacher was to explore the Chinese Christian experience as viewed through the eyes of my students. A deeper understanding on my part of their experiences facilitated enabling the students to speak and write in English. The dissertation describes the students' journey through the curriculum as recorded through class discussions, interviews and the students' writings. The students were then interviewed while they were studying in graduate schools and asked to reflect back upon their New York experiences and evaluate what was or was not helpful to them in preparing for graduate school.
