The main purpose of the study is to investigate the current status and practices in the music curriculum of Hong Kong elementary and secondary schools. Issues were addressed, and recommendations made. The survey was conducted in 1988. It presents a sampling of 289 music teachers' responses regarding their educational background, attitudes towards music teaching, and subject matter of their music program. Their views on the current situation and the future direction of music education in Hong Kong were also considered. Interviews with music educators and music education related administrators of various organizations as well as observations of music classes conducted in both 1988 and 1989 were used as a basis for study, further consideration, and discussion. Eight major implications were discussed: (1) The music curriculum of Hong Kong has further developed since the findings reported by Timothy Wo-Ping Foo's study on the secondary schools in 1973. The Hong Kong Education Department has established a curriculum guide for the music teachers since then. More of the music teachers are teaching the basic areas of music understandings than in 1973. (2) The training of music teachers and their attitudes affect the subject matter of their music program. (3) Music teachers should be aware that music in the curriculum is basic and is essential for educating the whole person. (4) Music learning should be artistically and intellectually oriented. Teachers should realize that the value and interest acquired in music learning would form the basis which affects the way of life and culture. (5) Broad classroom activities with comprehensive musicianship should be emphasized. Learning basic skills in areas such as part-singing, critical listening and contemporary music should not be omitted and should be increased in the curriculum. (6) Teachers training gearing towards the above issues is an urgent responsibility of the Education Department. (7) It may be beneficial to reallocate the man-power resources by using a program like the "Artists-in-Residence" to alleviate the problem of staffing shortage. (8) Music educators must master their tools and address the issues cooperatively if music is to be basic in the school curriculum.
