This dissertation studies Chinese Buddhist images (from around 400 to 600 CE) through the lens of affectivity, in order to understand how the affective experience and emotional discourse enabled by such images mediated social and political relations in early medieval China. The main materials considered are sculpted Buddhist figural images and dedicatory image inscriptions of the period, supplemented by related historical records and religious writings. Through a semiotic framework, this dissertation addresses the meanings generated by Buddhist image-making on three levels: visual-affective, linguistic-emotional, and socio-political. The dissertation suggests that Buddhist statues, as a type of unprecedentedly wide-ranging anthropomorphic imagery for public viewing in early medieval China, enabled collective engagement in the exploration of facial affectivity, expressions of religious emotions, and the imagination of socio-political identity.
