This dissertation undertakes an environmental and cultural-historical re-reading of scientific knowledge of the living world in modern China. I consider the production of modern scientific knowledge as major sites of reconceiving and reshaping human-nonhuman relations. Recent scholarship on the history of science has established the significance of modern China in the global production of scientific knowledge. The inquiry of this dissertation is more specifically on its environmental implications. Did natural sciences in modern China duplicate the same human- nonhuman relationship as mainstream global scientific practices, which sought objective knowledge of the external world? This dissertation examines the way natural sciences circulated in modern China through fusions with diverse Chinese cultures of "ten thousand things" (wanwu 萬物), which some critics consider to be a forgotten and suppressed line of ecological thinking. I investigate the tension and friction between the "worlding" project of Mr. Science's and the native worlds of "ten thousand things" that constantly surfaced in the writings of modern Chinese scientists during the first half of the twentieth century. I argue that such tension and friction informed an important space for reconceptualizing scientific knowledge of the living world, which foregrounds multispecies entanglements and humans' "virtues" (de 德) in carefully nurturing human-nonhuman relations. The main body of this dissertation delves into four scientific subjects thematically. Chapter 1 traces the rise of biology and the emergence of shengwu 生物 (living things) and ziran 自然 (nature) as matters of knowledge and concern. I pay special attention to translator and science textbook writer Du Yaquan, who refused to dissociate humans' moral responsibilities from science-based worldviews. Chapter 2 examines botanists Hu Xiansu and Wu Zhengyi who, against utilitarianist and profit-driven assumptions behind "economic (jingji 經濟) botany," also referred to jingji's neo-Confucian connotation and revived the bencao 本草 (fundamental herbs) botanical tradition to emphasize humans' vital dependency on plants. Chapter 3 surveys entomologists who, despite showcasing their expertise for scientifically identifying and eliminating injurious insects, "the enemies of humans," also talked about the "Chinese insect culture" or "particular Chinese love for insects," which suggested the potential to re-embed humans into an intimate and affective human-insect companionship. Chapter 4 focuses on meteorologist and geographer Zhu Kezhen's promotion for phenology (wuhouxue 物候學), which crossbred with rich peasants' knowledge of cyclical natural phenomena and necessitated carefully listening to the varying rhythms of living and nonliving beings in a specific locale."Enlivening/sheng" emphasizes life as unceasing processes that knit together ten thousand things and thus generously allow for human livelihood practices. Such worldviews, together with new scientific findings about life's complexity and variability, enabled modern Chinese scientists to better understand the liveliness and interdependency of all beings and to regear scientific knowledge towards care for the homeland. Using history of science in modern China as a critical case, this dissertation demonstrates the always ongoing potentiality of scientific knowledge of the living world, which arises from re-siting global practices of modern natural sciences through careful negotiations with local ecological cultures.
