Pictures enable people to access architecture far beyond their physical locale. Through photographs, an individual can understand a building without ever seeing it in person. This is among the reasons that photography has long played a critical role in the field of architecture. Photographs are essential to the dissemination, promotion, critique, and recording of architecture. They also are vital to the development and fortification of the architectural canon.Historically, architectural photography circulating in the public realm has been controlled by an elite collection of gatekeepers, such as editors, publishers, and cultural institutions, resulting in rarefied views of the built environment. The rise of online social media in the 21st century, however, has destabilized the gatekeeper's supremacy. Now, anyone with a camera and internet access can generate and circulate photographs associated with architecture. The gatekeeper now works alongside throngs of non-experts who offer new perspectives and augment the historical record of architecture.Despite this monumental shift in photographic practices, there is a scarcity of research exploring the intersection of social media, architecture, and photography. This exploratory study begins to fill that gap. Using a grounded theory approach, this study examined hundreds of Instagram pictorial posts, combined with a comparative review of photography in the American journal, Architectural Record. Intensive analysis, iterative coding, memo writing, and concept mapping were used to discover how photographs associated with architecture operate within a participatory media space, and how that operation differs from a traditional, gatekeeper-controlled media space. This study offers two important contributions to knowledge. First, it provides a descriptive map that illuminates defining features of Instagram, particularly around themes of authorship, function, and depiction. Second, it provides a conceptual framework that elucidates how the operation of photography differs between social media and a traditional media space. This framework serves as a clarifying lens through which we can view Instagram and its relationship to photography associated with architecture. Ultimately, this study argues that Instagram is a site of expansion, convergence, sociality, and ambiguity. This study finds that Instagram offers wider thinking about the built environment compared to traditional media environments; however, the democratization of architectural photography facilitated by Instagram comes with drawbacks. This research is situated within the architectural discipline, yet it incorporates research and paradigms from multiple disciplines. In addition to architectural scholars, this study will be of value to scholars concerned with Instagram and visual content on social media.
