This doctoral research explores a module infusing peace learning opportunities into design education, to dismantle participants' potential misunderstandings about other cultures. In this study, design also serves as a tool for creative intercultural dialogue and co-creation, bringing diverse worldviews into encounter and cooperation across global cultural barriers. This thesis investigates the conception of an online pedagogy of intercultural small-team cooperative co-design teamwork and how undergraduate interior design students from universities in Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States experienced it. Qualitative methods included analysis of the pedagogical module created, multi-modal evidence of 40 students' experiences before, during, and after implementation of the module, and debriefing with their three university faculty members. Analysis was framed by design, peacebuilding, and critical curriculum theories. The intention of the study was not to evaluate the pedagogy, but to qualitatively describe and analyze how the module was planned by the researcher and experienced by students from three countries at one particular time. The module plan embedded opportunities of intercultural learning, participation, representation, and engagement in constructive conflict for all team members. Cultural self-identification, necessary for intercultural exchange, proved challenging for many students during intercultural conversations. The presence of team members throughout a design process was not always a reflection of their participation or representation in the design outcome. Although students reported embracing diversity, they did not always recognize conflicts during their teams' design processes. Some student teams' design processes and co-designed artifacts demonstrated how design's creative language and process contributed to the development of conflict transformation, intercultural exchange, and a better understanding of power in team dynamics. This study contributes to new conversations in the fields of design and peacebuilding education. In design education, this research underlines structures of teams and pedagogical tasks to nurture equity within diversity and conflict transformation. In peacebuilding education, the study highlights how and why the process and visual language of design thinking can support peacebuilding education. Results suggest that postsecondary design education can play a role in fostering creative intercultural peacebuilding citizenship learning among postsecondary students beginning to engage in political life during polarized times.
