This dissertation illuminates the cultural significance of the emerging subgenre of "feminist horror" through close textual analysis of several relevant A24 films released after the mainstream inception of the #MeToo movement in 2017. Taken together, these films speak to the ways that women and femmes are made into monsters through the horrors of womanhood's lived reality. Using exaggerated horror narratives, these films viscerally play out the horrors of womanhood, girlhood, and even, at times, popular feminism itself. Feminist horror films open up spaces and avenues where female monstrosity is acceptable and even encouraged, though this monstrous embodiment is also limited in its radical potential. Through filmic analysis undergirded by American studies and intersectional feminist theory, I demonstrate the important updates that the horror genre has made to its historically gendered tropes and themes in order to speak to a new historical context and a primed feminist viewership amid a "horror renaissance." Though the updates that these films make to their respective horror tropes are significant and symbolic of an important cultural shift, progress is still highly limited by a variety of factors, including whiteness as default and a continued gendered imbalance in key behind-the-scenes filmmaking roles. The A24 films analyzed in depth as case studies include The Blackcoat's Daughter (2017), X (2022), Midsommar (2019), Hereditary (2018), and Ex Machina (2014). These films were selected due to their respective engagement with noted horror tropes surrounding the female experiences of adolescence, sexual activity, breakups and revenge, motherhood, and the posthuman. These exemplary horror films function as a manifestation of a gendered crisis in the film industry, as they foreground female empowerment and critique structures of male power through varying depictions of female monstrosity. The horror genre has historically been a site where societal anxieties are expressed, explored, and worked through using heightened and exaggerated monstrous narratives. The combination of recent trends in popular (and particularly white) feminism with highly public controversies in the entertainment industry offer context that help to explain the rise of horror narratives that prioritize women's revenge and independence as well as celebrate manifold forms of femininity. While each of the feminist horror films examined in this dissertation presents a unique narrative, they are united by their common interest in addressing urgent issues of feminist concern through the horrific and the monstrous as well as their implicit acknowledgement of the female horror fan as a legitimate viewership and source of revenue.
