The selective sensing of anions has been a major focus in chemistry due to its use in everyday situations. So far, it has been shown how the presence of contaminant anions in environmental settings, or the incorrect concentrations of anions in biological systems, can lead to diseases or have negative consequences to the environment. It would therefore be beneficial to improve the selectivity of anion sensors to better monitor these issues. Chapter 1 introduces anions, typical modes of sensing them via optical means, and how supramolecular chemists have developed different molecule types for the selective sensing of anions. The latter part of this chapter covers a shift towards selective sensing systems in supramolecular chemistry as opposed to extensively developed optical chemosensors. Chapters 2 and 3 fall under these systems, showcasing how the use of cationic extracting agents can lead to parameters for the selective sensing of diverse anions using commercially available, non-selective chemosensors. Chapter 2 focuses on deprotonation-based chemosensors, while Chapter 3 continues the general idea, but with hydrogen bonding-based chemosensors instead.Chapter 4 discusses the potential of using ditopic transporters for the transport of zwitterionic species through a phospholipid bilayer. Successful transport of these would result in better parameters for the development of selective sensing systems towards analytes such as amino acids. This chapter highlights the use of squaramide-crownether hybrids for this purpose.
