The cruel enslavement of Black individuals occurred around the world for centuries. Today, many people still struggle to acknowledge their own role in this dark legacy. Even former plantation sites in the United States, inherently linked to the enslavement of Black individuals, have become tourist attractions that often ignore or romanticize the history of the enslaved. This thesis analyzes six plantation tourism sites along Louisiana's River Road in an effort to understand how these sites contend with their grotesque past, if they choose to contend with it at all. The goal of this study is to understand how spatial design choices within plantation tours communicate a hierarchy of narrative importance for the stories of the formerly enslaved and the former enslavers. Through a combination of literary scholarship and participant observation, this thesis argues that plantation tourism experiences differ in their spatial narrative approaches and their acknowledgement of the history of enslavement, but each site bears a responsibility to break with romantic delusion in order to reconcile the opposing stories of their past.
