Airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5, or aerosols with aerodynamic diameters ≤ 2.5 μm) adversely affects public health and are critical to the changing climate on Earth. Atmospheric organic aerosol (OA) are a substantial component of PM2.5, originating from both direct emissions and formed in situ from complex atmospheric oxidation or multiphase chemical reactions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this dissertation, our overarching aim was to provide detailed molecular-level understanding of the emission, formation and evolution of atmospherically-relevant OAs through laboratory experiments, with emphasis on aerosol chemical composition analysis. Chapters 2 and 3 examine the kinetics and products resulting from the heterogeneous (or multiphase) hydroxyl radical (•OH) oxidation of isoprene epoxydiol (IEPOX)-derived secondary organic aerosol (SOA) as one possible atmospheric aging mechanism of an atmospherically-abundant OA type. Fresh IEPOX-derived SOA is formed when natural isoprene emissions from deciduous trees are atmospherically oxidized in the presence of anthropogenic pollutants; however, its aging mechanisms remain uncertain. We determined the heterogeneous•OH oxidation kinetics for the full freshly-generated IEPOX-SOA particulate mixture as well as for specific IEPOX-SOA constituents, and found that this is a dynamic process in which aerosol chemical composition and physicochemical properties play important roles. Chapter 2 demonstrates faster heterogeneous oxidation rates with decreasing aerosol acidity. As anthropogenic emissions enhance ambient •OH concentrations and increase aerosol acidity, IEPOX-SOA has a much shorter lifetime (~2-3 days in highly polluted urban regions of the world) than that estimated for remote forested regions (~59-131 days in Southeast USA and the Amazon Rainforest), suggesting that atmospheric chemistry models need to consider the atmospheric fate of IEPOX-SOA by heterogeneous •OH oxidation, especially depending on the world region. Chapter 4 systematically examines the chemical composition of OAs generated from an electronic cigarette also known as electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) under representative user conditions (i.e., power settings and e-liquid compositions). We identified and quantified a set of oligomeric species generated from thermal decomposition of its major constituents that could be used as ENDS-specific molecular tracers. Results from Chapter 4 will allow future researchers to separate ENDS exposure from tobacco-related exposures, increasing the ability to estimate the health impacts of ENDS-derived aerosols.
