Empty nesting and midlife are often compounding phenomena in a mother's life. This study aims to understand how art therapy can aid a woman's reconceptualizing of herself after her role as a caretaker winds down. The researcher theorized that mothers in this stage of life might be struggling with unrecognized grief, body image, role change, and external losses like the loss of a parent or relationship. This study aimed to find commonalities in experience, and to test if art therapy can help a woman in midlife refocus and reinvent herself post children. This study employed phenomenology and art to explore the participants' experience of this life phase. The findings confirmed that themes of loss, grief, and a struggle with the aging process are common in women of this age, and that art therapy is a useful and powerful tool for giving these women space and perspective to explore their changing bodies and roles. The significance of the findings suggests that art therapy is particularly well suited to aid women struggling with midlife and the absence of their maternal role, to reinvent themselves and find new purpose.
