My dissertation investigates certain mainstream films from the 1990s that don't have any explicitly queer characters, yet have since become iconic in the queer community; specifically, Thelma & Louise (1991), Death Becomes Her (1992), Now and Then (1995), and Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997). Using a blend of queer cultural studies and film studies methods, specifically close reading, I argue that a queer viewer's engagement with cinematic images is more complex than simply identifying-or not identifying-with what's explicitly shown. I break with the limiting frameworks of queer visibility to show how these specific films themselves incite, suggest, circulate, and create queer affective attachments and queer desires. My attentiveness to desire-in all its messiness and ephemerality-pushes beyond simple conceptions of identity in order to ask how film makes the viewer feel or desire differently. By paying particular attention to queer affect in each chapter, my dissertation makes an intervention in the current popular discourse in order to explore and complicate what counts as queer representation and expand on what sorts of films can be categorized as queer. Ultimately, I contend that the narrow focus on visibility and explicit representation overlooks an entire body of film that should be considered as a part of queer film history.
