Replacing conventional vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs) powered by lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), is widely regarded as a promising strategy to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector. However, uncertainties surrounding battery lifetime and its impact on the economic and environmental benefits of EV adoption present significant challenges. To address these issues, this dissertation develops a comprehensive modeling approach to assess the decarbonization potential of transportation by EVs, with a specific focus on the effects of battery degradation. First, an electrochemical model is developed for commercial lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC)-graphite LIBs to analyze capacity loss under various operating and storage conditions. This enhances the understanding of LIB degradation and provides insights for optimizing battery performance. Additionally, an electrochemical model is proposed for LIBs with directly recycled electrodes, assessing the performance and degradation of recycled NMC and lithium manganese oxide (LMO) in new cells. The dissertation also includes a systematic analysis of how battery degradation affects the environmental and economic performance of EVs. A hierarchical analysis of United States (U.S.) EV subsidy policies is conducted to evaluate their cost-effectiveness in carbon emission mitigation, considering factors such as battery degradation and the electricity grid mix. A techno-economic analysis, integrating a multiphysics model of battery degradation, further explores the economic implications of battery performance on EV adoption. The findings provide valuable insights into the electrochemical behavior of LIBs in EVs, advancing understanding of their techno-economic and environmental impacts, and offering scientific guidance for policy-making aimed at optimizing the benefits of EV adoption.
