Electroencephalography (EEG) is an efficient, affordable and noninvasive method to record the electrical activity of the human brain using electrodes placed on a scalp. Thanks to its non-invasive nature and simple recording mechanics, it is widely used for clinical studies such as medical diagnostics [1, 2], brain-computer interface [3], memory consolidation during sleep [4], cognition [5] and many more as illustrated in Figure 1.1. In particular, EEG is an attractive method to monitor and study an individual's brain health for a long period of time.1.1 Long-term EEG applicationFigure 1.2 shows that through the course of one's lifetime, the brain undergoes drastic changes, from childhood cognitive development to adulthood and eventually to cognitive impairment at the older age. Monitoring and studying these changes in brain health will be of high interest in both research and consumer electronics. For healthy adults, there are many non-EEG monitoring applications that can indirectly relate to brain health, such as heart-rate variability (HRV) [6], accelerometry [7] and audio recording of respiration [8]. However, many of these indirect applications do not apply to other age groups due to diminishing accuracy or difficulty of deployment. For example, the correlation between HRV and functional connectivity of the brain decreases for elderly group [9][10], and many of these monitoring devices cannot be deployed on infantile groups outside the clinics due to difficulties in controlling their movements [11][12][13][14]. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to develop an EEG recorder that can directly access the EEG data for a long period of time on a daily Figure 1.2: EEG application to monitor brain development and impairment of an individual for long-term period. The purpose of a long-term EEG recording device is to monitor brain health during daily activities outside a clinical setting, such as sleep, meditation, and walking, as illustrated in Figure 1.3. These devices aim to capture established EEG biomarkers for these activities, which are essential for assessing brain health and performance. The primary objective is to extend the temporal and demographic scope of existing EEG biomarker data, rather than to identify new types of EEG signals.1.2 Limitations of existing EEG recording systemsThere are primarily two categories of EEG recorders available in the market: clinical-grade recorders and consumer-grade wearable electronics. Both types have their own disadvantages that limit their effectiveness for long-term recording. Figure 1.4 illustrates the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of recorders.Clinical-grade recorders offer very dense electrode coverage and produce high-quality signals due to their high-power, low-noise amplifiers [15, 16]. However, their large size and high cost limit their use outside the clinic, making long-term access by individuals impractical.
