Stimuli-responsive polymers are an emerging class of smart materials that respond to changes in their environment, such as temperature, light, and magnetic fields. This dissertation delves into the development and characterization of stimuli-responsive polymeric systems both in particle form and as patterned surfaces, offering advancements in targeted drug delivery and size-selective nanoparticle capture. Chapter 1 lays the foundation by discussing various types of stimuli-responsive polymers and their mechanisms. It emphasizes thermal-responsive polymers, NIR-responsive species, leading to potential applications ranging from particles to patterned surfaces. Then, a novel magnetic-directed micro-particle is introduced, capable of near-infrared light-triggered guest release. This study exploits the photothermal effects of polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles and the temperature sensitivity of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) to control the release of encapsulated substances, offering a promising avenue for targeted therapeutic applications. Chapter 3 explores a three-dimensional (3D) temperature-controlled interchangeable pattern for size-selective nanoparticle capture. The work highlights the development of a patterned PNIPAM surface, which morphologically transforms at its lower critical solution temperature (LCST), thus facilitating the reversible capture and release of nanostructures. Furthermore, a dual-responsive surface with an inverse pattern designed is presented for protein capture and preservation, which integrates near-infrared light-induced conformation changes of polymer brushes to modulate the capture and release processes. The final chapter, Chapter 5, provides a conclusion to the thesis, summarizing the significant contributions of this work to the field of stimuli-responsive materials and suggesting future directions for research. This body of work demonstrates the utility of stimuli-responsive polymers in creating sophisticated materials for advanced biomedical applications, emphasizing the synergy between material design and functional outcomes.
