Pyrolysis is central to fuel performance and renewable fuel production. Solid fuel rockets have high priority in space and military applications. For their performance, it is important to know the pyrolysis products of the fuel components that are combusted. However, studies by traditional methods are completely inadequate to produce heating on the appropriate timescale of 10.

6 ºC/s, leading to misleading product results. Regarding biofuel, a recent DOE estimate is that carbon neutral fuel from woody biomass could displace >20 % of petroleum use. The one problem complicating pyrolysis of feedstocks is production of PAHs, leading to char and the poisoning of catalysts and production equipment. Standard analytical techniques such as py-GC-MS are powerful for species identification/quantification, but their detection timescales are long (s or greater), that cannot access early ongoing chemistry and have limited ability to detect PAHs.To address these experimental needs, we have repurposed molecular beam methods in two respects:(1) Chemistry timescale. Heating is done by laser pulse surface heating at the front end of supersonic gas expansions. High (>1000 K) temperatures can be attained, with total gas expansion timescales of µs. We can use benzylpyridinium "thermometer" ions to characterize pyrolysis product temperatures.(2) Sensitive, selective aromatics/PAH detection. This is accomplished via resonant two photon ionization (REMPI).These combined methods have not been used and developed in other groups. Part of our efforts are, necessarily, method refinement and development. Two systems, solid rocket fuel based on hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPBs), and a lignin as a representative of biofuel are of primary interest in this project.
