In this dissertation, I examine the way that three Islamic thinkers (Abu Hamid al-Ghazali [d. 1111 CE], el Mancebo de Arevalo [fl. 1530s], and Rifaʿa al-Tahtawi [d. 1873]) engage with ideas and cultural traditions of non-Muslim origin in response to political crises. Borders and boundaries are often thought of as rigid, inflexible obstructions that prevent the movement and flow of ideas and peoples. Historically, this has been especially true of the way that the border between Europe and the Islamic world has often been conceived. However, I provide evidence of the porousness of this perceived border. I am particularly interested in the impact that the conceptual boundary between Islamic and non-Islamic thought plays in generating new ways of thinking about politics within the Islamic intellectual tradition. Al-Ghazali's criticism of taqlid, or learning by relying on established authorities, demands a serious, good faith engagement with any possible sources of knowledge. El Mancebo de Arevalo's use of aljamiado, Spanish languages written with Arabic script, helps construct a hybrid Iberian-Islamic identity in conflict with the prohibition of Islam in Spanish territories in the 16th century. And finally, al-Tahtawi manipulates the genre of his text to rearticulate the political and scientific knowledge he finds in 19th-century France as disciplinary advice meant to affect policy at home in Egypt. The manner in which each of these thinkers engage with ideas that are ostensibly foreign shows that these boundaries are productive frontier spaces, especially at discrete moments when older, traditional ways of political thinking fail to respond to the contingencies of the world. The novel political insights that these three figures offer, I argue, are constituted at least in part by their engagement with foreign ways of conceiving the world.
