This project investigates the effectiveness of lavender aromatherapy in improving sleep quality among older adults diagnosed with dementia. Sleep disturbances are a common and challenging symptom in dementia patients, impacting their overall well-being. As a non-pharmacological intervention, lavender aromatherapy has gained attention for its potential benefits in enhancing sleep quality. This quasi-experimental project was conducted with 31 residents of Glorius Home, all diagnosed with dementia. Over a six-week period, participants inhaled lavender essential oil for 20-30 minutes before bedtime, and their sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) at baseline and again at the second, fourth, and sixth weeks of the intervention. The results indicated a significant improvement in sleep quality, with a 49.3% reduction in PSQI scores from pre- to post-intervention (t(30) = 24.1, p < .001). These findings suggest that lavender aromatherapy can be an effective, non-invasive intervention to improve sleep quality in dementia patients, offering a promising alternative to pharmacological treatments. The project highlights the potential of lavender aromatherapy to enhance the quality of life for individuals with dementia and provides a foundation for future research exploring other non-pharmacological interventions for sleep disturbances in this population.
