This dissertation connects the widely known, outward parts of Martin Luther King Jr.'s political theory, such as nonviolence and civil disobedience, with King's person-based core philosophy which is often under-interpreted or misunderstood. King developed a basic structure of values that undergirded his more famous commitments. At the pinnacle of King's hierarchy are 1) "personality" and 2) "beloved community." The problem of having not one but two items at the top is mitigated by King's belief that the two are mutually reinforcing. Persons make community and the community makes persons. The inner person is the real site of all profit and loss and the real standard for evaluating all our political structures, laws, policies, traditions, and practices. From this pinnacle, King derives his next value, love, which is our proper response to that which holds the highest worth. And love, joined with power and extended beyond personal relationships-into traditions, norms, structures, policies, and laws-is what we call justice. King measures the worth of anything impersonal, like an ideology, an emotion, a political practice, a method, or a law by its personal impact-by its value as an expression of love. Politics, then, becomes a discipline or practice that should be evaluated, to a great extent, by its intrinsic goods, according to how it forms or deforms the persons who participate. King makes this the task of statecraft: develop a practice of political power that will not corrupt the protester, the activist, the government official, or the statesman but will make her a more fully human, linked, loving, participant in the communities we make and that make us. This dissertation argues that King's system stands favorably against the more famous, canonical systems of modern political thought.
