A new method is developed for the evaluation of seismic pore pressure buildup and liquefaction in level, horizontally layered, saturated sandy soil sites. The method is implemented with a computer program names DESRAMOD, which combines Dobry's pore presssure model based on cyclic strain controlled tests, with computer code DESRA-2 developed by Lee and Finn for the seismic response of a horizontally layered soil profile to base excitation. DESRAMOD incorporates the main aspects known to govern the seismic response and associated pore pressure development in sands: (i) nonlinear stress-strain behavior; (ii) pore pressure buildup controlled by the amplitude and number of cyclic strains which are related to ground accelerations and soil shear wave velocities; (iii) irregular seismic input accelerations and corresponding irregular soil stress-strain response; and (iv) degradation and variation of soil stiffness and strength caused by the pore pressure increase, dissipation and redistribution. The development of the model included a parametric study and a detailed investigation of the following three case histories: Heber Road Site and Wildlife Site liquefaction occurrences in the Imperial Valley, California, during the 1979 and 1981 earthquakes, respectively, and the pore pressures recorded at Owi Island in Tokyo Bay in 1980. As part of the Wildlife Site case study, an extensive static and cyclic laboratory investigation was conducted, including verification of the influence of specimen density, disturbance and fabric, as well as type of testing technique and loading boundary conditions, on the cyclic strain-controlled results. Also, at this Wildlife site the U.S. Geological Survey has recently placed several piezometers and accelerometers, and DESRAMOD was used to predict accelerations and pore pressures which may be measured during future earthquakes. These case studies revealed that the seismic response of a saturated sandy soil profile is governed in a complex manner by the development of seismic strains, the resulting pore pressure buildup responsible for soil stiffness degradations, and the simultaneous redistribution and dissipation of pore pressures. This response is very sensitive to the geometric configuration and stiffness distribution of the profile with depth. The study clearly revealed that, for a successful description and understanding of the seismic pore pressure buildup and liquefaction phenomenon, all these aspects need to be analyzed together as done here with DESRAMOD.
