Atmospheric sound propagation is affected by factors depending on meteorological conditions and the topography of the ground. The dynamic interaction between surface topology and meteorological events yields a surface with variable acoustical properties. The greatest contributor to acoustic attenuation is the nature of the surface over which sound propagates. Water saturation inevitably affects the properties of the earth's surface. Common ground conditions like soil can be described as a collection of granular particles with void space between the grains. Energy from an acoustic wave dissipates through viscous and thermal losses as it interacts with the soil and the interstitial space between the particles. This dissipative behavior is a defining characteristic of porous materials. The goal of the presented research is to understand the change in acoustic properties of soil at different moisture contents.
