To sustain a competitive advantage, manufacturers within the Department of Defense Industrial Base sector (DIB) developed the capability to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into existing manufacturing systems. This integration presented challenges: implementation complexity, equipment and process compatibility, redesign costs, workforce training needs, and trust in AI systems. The purpose of this research was to investigate how AI was implemented in the DIB, utilizing the World-Class Manufacturing (WCM) model as a potential implementation tool alongside established approaches and methodologies. This study employed semi-structured qualitative interviews with industry managers via Zoom to explore the underlying barriers to AI adoption. Analysis revealed critical themes such as limited understanding of AI software, cultural resistance, data-related obstacles, financial constraints, implementation hurdles, leadership gaps, security concerns, and sustainability issues. These findings underscored AI integration remaining unsustainable due to persistent comprehension and operational challenges. As a strategic response, the study proposes adopting the WCM model as a guiding implementation model for effective AI implementation. As elaborated in this study, these findings have established a critical basis for further examination of the structural, organizational, and strategic factors essential to advancing AI integration within the DIB.
